Why is Imaginary Play important?
Children develop their language skills, social and emotional skills while participating in make-believe or imaginary play. Children choose props and scenarios that interest them, it is a wonderful way of observing functional skills and communication skills. Dressing a doll or dressing up as a fire fighter creates opportunities to develop physical skills in a fun and stress-free environment.
Running around as pretend fire fighters helps with gross motor development and coordination. Imaginative play can create situations in which not everyone gets what they want, teaching children self-regulation and problem-solving skills. The interactions and communication opportunities develop self-confidence within a situation that the child chooses. The child who does not get what he wants needs to learn how to manage unpleasant emotions for play to continue. Imaginary play is a wonderful, fun way for children to explore and learn.
