“You can’t use up creativity, the more you use, the more you have”. – Maya Angelou

How to create a creative environment for children (ELDA 5)

  • According to the Child Act, children have the right to explore, to be curious and to investigate ways of recording and depicting their experiences.
  • Encourage young children to use their imagination to tackle problems with interest and confidence.
  • Encourage young children to manipulate and work with different materials.
  • Young children should be able to explore and develop their ideas based on their personal experiences using their senses, emotions, and observations.
  • Keep in mind that the process of creating is more important than the end product.
  • The focus of all activities should be on the developmental of skills through offering the children enjoyable, experiential processes, rather than on working towards highly polished products.
  • Allow free movement by giving the child larger paper and brushes.
  • Reward children for being creative.
  • Do not show the child a prototype model of what you expect from him or her.
  • Do not help the child to complete his or her creative work.
  • Do not ask the child what it is, rather ask the child “tell me about it”.
  • Do not restrict the child’s use of materials.
